Two coloured Heart Crochet Pattern - using rows NO MAGIC CIRCLE

Hi, I did say I would try to post again soon, so here I am, back on my crochet blogging game.

Background

It's self explanatory, this is an update to heart pattern for 2 colours to be used. I've made mine in the colours of the Ukrainian flag which I'll probably add a little brooch finding on it.

The only tricky part is adjusting where you stop and start with the finishing of the edges around the side of the heart. It's ok, as long as you weave the ends in the back. with a sharp needle.

Heart Pattern - made in rows.

Written in UK crochet terms.

Abbreviations

ch = chain 1

st = stitch

dc = double crochet

inc = Increase 2 dc into st (you can do it invisibly, by doing a dc into front loop, then dc into both loops)

dec = Decrease 2dc (you can also decrease invisibly, by going through the front loop of the first st, then both loops of the 2nd stitch, before doing a yarn over to pull through both stitches on your hook).

sl st = slip stitch

Materials and notions

  • Using 3mm crochet hook - this will produce a firm heart, which can be turned into a brooch.

(3.5mm can be used too, but will give a floppier heart shape)

  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

  • DK cotton yarn. 4ply can be used too but will just give a smaller heart.

I've used (Colour A) yellow and (Colour B) dark blue from the Paintbox cotton range.

Pattern

Using Colour A:

Ch 2.

Row 1: Turn, inc. Ch 1. Turn. [2]

Row 2: Inc in both st. Ch 1. Turn. [4]

Row 3: Inc, 2dc, inc. Ch 1. Turn. [6]

Row 4: Inc, 4dc, inc. (Cut off Colour A and join with Colour B) Ch 1. Turn. [8]

Row 5: 8 dc. Ch 1. Turn. [8]

You are now making the top curve of one side of the heart.

Row 6: Dec, 2dc. Ch 1. Turn. [3]

Row 7: 3dc. Ch 1. Turn. [3]

Row 8: Dec, dc. Sl st down the side of the curve, sl st into the front loop of the next st of Row 5 you meet.

You are now making the curve of the other side of the heart.

Row 6 part 2: 2dc, dec. Ch 1. Turn. [3]

Row 7 part 2: 3dc. Ch 1. Turn. [3]

Row 8 part 2: Dec, dc.. Cut yarn and bind off.

Now you will be doing dc around the side of the heart as it looks a bit forlorn and rugged in its current state. If making a brooch like I am, I like to make 2 identical heart and then have right sides facing out, crochet them together as I work the edges:

Using Colour A, 4 dc along the first side of the heart starting at the yellow part in my case.

You should be just before the pointy tip of the heart now.

Dc, ch 2, dc back into same st.

Working up the 2nd side of the heart:

4dc,

Cut Colour A and start using Colour B:

dc, dc inc, dc, dc inc, 2dc, sl st into the hollow between the 2 curves of the heart top.

2dc, dc inc, 2 dc.

Then cut yarn and work an invisible bind off (I like this tutorial as it shows how to do it perfectly)

A bi-coloured heart all done!
