Heart Crochet Pattern - using rows NO MAGIC CIRCLE

Hello and welcome back to the blog! It's been a while and that is just life getting busy, but I will try my best to be back on here more regularly.

Background

So I've taught a few offline crochet class in the evenings and have realised that magic circle is not for everyone. Which is tricky, as more crochet heart patterns involve a magic circle.

I know I've got a few heart crochet patterns on here and Ravelry and on Etsy already, but this pattern is really easy-peasy!

There's even a photo tutorial for you to follow at the end.

Heart Pattern - made in rows.

Written in UK crochet terms.

Abbreviations

ch = chain 1

st = stitch

dc = double crochet

inc = Increase 2 dc into st (you can do it invisibly, by doing a dc into front loop, then dc into both loops)

dec = Decrease 2dc (you can also decrease invisibly, by going through the front loop of the first st, then both loops of the 2nd stitch, before doing a yarn over to pull through both stitches on your hook).

sl st = slip stitch

Materials and notions

  • Using 3mm crochet hook - this will produce a firm heart, which can be turned into a brooch.

(3.5mm can be used too, but will give a floppier heart shape)

  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

  • DK cotton yarn. 4ply can be used too but will just give a smaller heart.

Pattern

Ch 2.

Row 1: Turn, inc. Ch 1. Turn. [2]

Row 2: Inc in both st. Ch 1. Turn. [4]

Row 3: Inc, 2dc, inc. Ch 1. Turn. [6]

Row 4: Inc, 4dc, inc. Ch 1. Turn. [8]

Row 5: 8 dc. Ch 1. Turn. [8]

You are now making the top curve of one side of the heart.

Row 6: Dec, 2dc. Ch 1. Turn. [3]

Row 7: 3dc. Ch 1. Turn. [3]

Row 8: Dec, dc. Sl st down the side of the curve, sl st into the front loop of the next st of Row 5 you meet.

You are now making the curve of the other side of the heart.

Row 6 part 2: 2dc, dec. Ch 1. Turn. [3]

Row 7 part 2: 3dc. Ch 1. Turn. [3]

Row 8 part 2: Dec, dc.

Now you will be doing dc around the side of the heart as it looks a bit forlorn and rugged in its current state.

Dc inc, 5dc along the first side of the heart.

You should be just before the pointy tip of the heart now.

Dc, ch 2, dc back into same st.

Working up the 2nd side of the heart:

5dc, dc inc, dc, dc inc, 2dc, sl st into the hollow between the 2 curves of the heart top.

2dc, dc inc, dc.

Then cut yarn and work an invisible bind off (I like this tutorial as it shows how to do it perfectly)

Voila, one pretty heart and not a magic circle in sight!

Enjoy turning it into a brooch, an appliqué for a toy/garment or even cute garland.
